After defeating England 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin on Sunday, Spain was declared European champions. After a month-long celebration throughout Germany, La Roja won their fourth continental title, setting a record.

We examine every record that was broken at Euro 2024 within the last month:

Lamine Yamal: Youngest player and scorer

At the age of 16 years and 338 days, Spain’s teenage star Lamine Yamal created history by playing in a European Championship match at the youngest player’s age ever, against Croatia.

By achieving this, he surpassed the previous record established by Kacper Kozlowski of Poland, who participated in Euro 2020 at the age of 17 years and 246 days. At 16 years and 362 days, Yamal then made history by being the youngest player to score a goal at the Euros in Spain’s 2-1 semifinal victory against France.

Pepe the oldest player

Conversely, when Portugal’s 41-year-old defender Pepe onto the pitch against the Czech Republic, he set a record for the oldest player in a European Championship.

When he made his appearance in the quarterfinal match against France, he was 41 years and 130 days old, which is the average age at which football players retire.

At 40 years and 86 days old when he played against Belgium at Euro 2016, Gabor Kiraly, the goalkeeper for Hungary, set the previous record, which was surpassed by the Porto center back.

Modric the oldest scorer

Luka Modric scored for Croatia in a 1-1 tie with Italy to become the tournament’s oldest goalscorer.

At 38 years and 289 days, Modric beat the record of 32 days held by Austrian Ivica Vastic in 2008.

Ronaldo’s sixth Euros

Cristiano Ronaldo, who is 39 years old, was aiming to break the record for the oldest striker, but during Portugal’s journey to the quarterfinals, he was unable to add to his record-breaking 14 goals in the tournament, most notably missing a penalty against Slovenia.

But Ronaldo asserted ownership of other records. Ronaldo participated in a historic sixth European Championship in Germany after making his debut at Euro 2004. With 30 appearances overall—at least seven more than any other player—he is the most experienced player in the competition.

The fastest goal for Bajrami:

Fastest goal ever in the history of EURO!

EURO2024 Nedim Bajrami 🇦🇱⚽️

— EURO 2024 UEFA (@EURO2024) June 16, 2024 After just 23 seconds, Nedim Bajrami of Albania gave his team the lead against Italy, setting a record for the quickest goal in a European Championship.

The previous Euros mark for the fastest goal, set in 2004 by Russian Dmitri Kirichenko versus Greece, was crushed by Bajrami, clocking in at 67 seconds.

Later, in a match against Austria, Merih Demiral of Turkey scored the second-fastest goal in just 57 seconds.

Second-most own goals:

With ten own goals scored in Euro 2024, the record appeared to be beaten until cooler heads won out. At a European Championship, the record number of own goals is still 11, set in the previous tournament (2021).

Up until Euro 2024, the following players scored goals with their own net: Samet Akaydin (Turkey), Donyell Malen (Netherlands), Robin Le Normand (Spain), Jan Vertonghen (Belgium), and Maximilian Wober (Austria), Robin Hranac (Czech Republic), Klaus Gjasula (Albania), Riccardo Calafiori (Italy), and Antonio Rudiger (Germany).

Fascinatingly, from 1976 to 1996, there were no own goals scored at the Euros.
