How the Celtics defeated the injured Mavericks in Game 2 to seize control of the NBA Finals

Boston: The pain is in Luka Dončić. Jason Kidd’s strategy of manipulating the Celtics didn’t work, and Kyrie Irving is having trouble. All of these contribute to Dallas’s current 2-0 deficit in the NBA Finals.

With a 105-98 victory on Sunday night, Boston established tight control of this series thanks to 26 points from Jrue Holiday, a nearly triple-double from Jayson Tatum, and another solid performance from Jaylen Brown.

Despite suffering from persistent knee and ankle problems and a wounded chest, Dončić displayed his dominance once more in the defeat, finishing with a 32-point triple double. However, he only managed nine points after the break, and if any of his ailments continue to bother him, Dallas may struggle to pay for it if another player doesn’t step up to help the Mavs win more games.

“I believe that my mistakes and my missed free throws cost us the game,” Dončić remarked, indicating that his physical condition was “OK.” He said he didn’t feel any discomfort until the next day, however he sustained the injury while leading the charge in Game 1.

Dončić said, “I was [questionable].” But I want to play all the time. We spent the entire day getting ready.

Following his 16 points on 7 of 18 shots in Game 2, Irving is shooting 13 of 37 in this series. In two games, he is 0 of 8 on threes. Since Irving departed the Boston Celtics in 2019, his teams have lost 12 straight games and have never defeated the Boston club.

Irving remarked, “I would shoulder the majority of the responsibility.” “The first two games weren’t the best for me, especially with Luke scoring 25 points or more, grabbing rebounds, dishing out assists, and doing other intangibles. I’ve always thought that it’s my job to make other people feel comfortable on the court as well.

“We are all responsible for it,” Irving added. “I have a good feeling that after hearing what everyone has to say, they will all claim that they can improve.

However, I believe that the current message is to just get our bearings.

Game 3 will take place in Dallas’ American Airlines Center on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. eastern.

In a clear attempt to incite conflict with his rival, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd declared that Brown—rather than Tatum, who has more accolades—was the better player on the Celtics following practice on Saturday. Although the topic is unlikely to be resolved in a single game, Tatum overcame a subpar shooting performance to finish with 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 12 assists.

In a similar two-way performance, Brown added 21 points, seven assists, and three steals, which Kidd used as justification for his remarks on Brown’s superiority over Tatum. With 29 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and Boston behind by five points, Brown and Derrick White stopped P.J. Washington from dunking the ball. Brown subsequently made a basket on the opposite end for a 105-98 lead.

Boston coach Joe Mazzulla expressed his frustration, saying, “I’m really tired of hearing about one guy, or this guy or that guy, or everybody trying to make it out to be anything other than Celtic basketball.” “The most important thing is that everyone who played on that court today made winning plays on both ends of the court.”

On Sunday, Holiday was the Celtics’ leading scorer. As the only champion on the team, he pulled down 11 rebounds and hit 11 of 14 of his shots. His ability to defend the perimeter has contributed to Boston’s defensive strategy of putting Irving and Dončić on islands and restricting ball movement to shut down the rest of Dallas’ attack.

“I’m a man of the utilities. I’ll take any action necessary. Holiday, one of Boston’s two major offseason signings, declared, “I’m here to win.” “I think they came here to win, and I’ll try my hardest to achieve that. But in the end, this is (Brown and Tatum’s) team, and I realize that it’s probably equally my team as theirs. That being said, as I feel like I’ve mentioned previously, the pressure they put on themselves to perform well is somewhat different from mine.

White scored eighteen points in total. He pursued Washington from across the court towards the end of the fourth quarter in order to position himself to make a crucial block.

It was disgusting, Mazzulla remarked.

Kidd thought otherwise. Kidd remarked, “It looked like a foul, but it wasn’t a foul because it wasn’t called.”

If there was a drawback to the Celtics’ victory, it was maybe that Kristaps Porziņģis’s injured right calf, which kept him out of the playoffs for ten games. Although PorziŇģis ended the game with 12 points on Sunday, he was taken out of the game for the rest of it after limping throughout the fourth quarter and having trouble moving up and down the floor.
“They’re amazing, and I’m here to help.”

Mazzulla stated, “Zero (concern)” regarding Porziņģis. “He is competent.”

like he sounded as like he plans to play, PorziņĿis stated that he would need to be examined on Monday before the Celtics go for Game 3 in Dallas.

“Out there, I’ll die,” said PorziŇčis.

Dallas trailed 54-51 at the half, with Dončić scoring 23 points. With time running down, Payton Pritchard made a 3-pointer from the NBA Finals logo to give the Boston Celtics an 83-74 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The team continued to dominate in the third quarter, leading by as many as 13.

For Mazzulla, the Pritchard shot was “the play of the game; it can’t go unnoticed.” In order to keep their stats straight, you see players all across the league pass up or pretend not to take the shot. He takes great satisfaction in making that shot and winning basketball.

Dončić finished with 11 rebounds, 11 assists, and 4 steals while shooting 12 of 21 from the field. For the Mavericks, who were 2 of 13 on three-pointers in the second half, Washington scored 17 points and pulled down seven boards. All Dallas players who weren’t called “Dončić” had a 2 of 17 3-point shooting percentage for the game.Additionally, the Mavericks shot their way out of a victory by missing 8 of 24 foul throws at the free-throw line. The Celtics shot 10 of 39 from 3-point range, but they converted 19 of 20 at the line to help offset that performance.

Kidd remarked, “(Dončić) put us in a position—he was really good tonight.” Sadly, we were unable to overcome the obstacle. I felt that our defense was excellent. All we need to do is tend to the ball. We need to score the ball, and we need to find someone to join Luka and Ky in that scoring area right now because there are far too many turnovers that allowed them to score.
