On Monday, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London will host the opening day of Wimbledon 2024, and all eyes will be on Carlos Alcaraz. Even the current World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will take against Yannick Hanfann in his opening bout later in the day.
Alcaraz is the current champion after winning the French Open and defeating Novak Djokovic in the championship match of the previous year. Mark Lajal, an Estonian qualifier who is also one week younger than the Spaniard, will be his first opponent. In the opening round at Wimbledon, he aims to become the third man in history to defeat the reigning champion.
“Obviously I want to put my name on that short list to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year,” Alcaraz stated in a statement prior to the match.
“I know that it’s going to be a really difficult and big challenge for me, but I think I’m ready to do it,” he stated.
Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open winner, will also make her comeback to the court. In the opening round, she will take on 22nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova. On opening day, Coco Gauff will play Caroline Dolehide to wrap up Center Court action. On the first day of competition, Aryna Sabalenka will also compete against Emina Bektas.
